Attiya Malik started at the USPTO in 2005 as a trademark examining attorney.  In 2008, she joined the Petitions and Policy Office of the USPTO as a policy staff attorney.  She is charged with preparing trademark policy guidance and training materials and conducting training on various examination issues for USPTO internal staff and external users.  This guidance includes examination guides, practice tips, updates and additions to the Trademark Manual of Examining Procedure (TMEP), and form paragraphs for letters and notifications.  Attiya also serves as liaison to several USPTO work/business units, specifically the Madrid Processing Unit (MPU), the Intent-to-Use/Divisional Unit (ITU), and the Assignment Recordation Branch.  She fields questions and provides guidance and training to these units.  Attiya’s liaison duties extend to the USPTO’s Madrid Protocol practice.  She helps prepare guidance documents and train internal staff and external users about outgoing international applications when the USPTO is the office of origin, and incoming requests for extension of protection when the United States is designated for protection.
